I have been bogged down with work. Just did a presentation at HPA on professional psychology practice in Hawaii and found some interesting information. In looking at workforce information I was shocked to discover that Hawaii has 854 licensed psychologists! Over 209 are out of state. Hawaii has experienced a 30% increase in the number licensed psychologists in the past 6 years. See the attached table obtained from DCCA. California had a 30% increase over a ten year period in the 1990’s and the conclusion was the state was “oversupplied.” This is likely to have implications for graduates from local programs, the employment market for psychologists in Hawaii, including those out of state psychologists who might have thought they could retire here, and the financial viability of private practice. I will talk about some interesting facts on internship match crisis and EPP scores of local graduates in my next post.
